The detail most people never see

The joint is the detail.

Mortar is shaped as it firms up. That shape decides how a wall handles rain.

Scroll through the 5 profiles masons use most.

Cross-section of two bricks and the mortar joint between them, showing the selected joint profile and how rain runs off the wall face
  1. 01

    Concave

    Tooled with a round jointer.

Pressed tight into the joint, it sheds rain off every course. The everyday choice for brick that faces weather.

    Sheds water

Fits: Most exterior brick, new or matched

  2. 02

    V-joint

    Tooled with a V-shaped jointer.

Also pressed tight, so it sheds water. The point casts a crisp shadow line along each course.

    Sheds water

    Fits: Traditional fronts, garden walls

  3. 03

    Weathered

Struck with the trowel, sloped down and out.

The slope throws rain clear of the brick below. It also draws a strong horizontal line.

    Sheds water

    Fits: Exposed walls, chimneys

  4. 04

    Raked

Mortar raked back from the face.

Deep shadows and a crisp look. But the ledge it leaves can hold water, so it suits covered walls.

    Holds water

Fits: Covered porches and interior walls

  5. 05

    Flush

Cut off flat with the trowel.

A smooth face, but the mortar is not pressed tight. Best where the wall gets paint, parging or stucco.

    Weaker seal

Fits: Walls that get a finish coat
