Retaining walls

Hold the hill. Handle the water.

A retaining wall holds back soil, and water is what pushes it over, so we build for water first.

The face you see is the smallest part of the job, and the work behind it keeps the wall standing.

We dig down to firm ground and build a compacted base of crushed stone for the first course to sit on.

Behind the wall goes clean drainage stone and a pipe that carries water out to daylight.

Walls that need it get geogrid, layers of grid that tie the wall back into the soil behind it.

We build with segmental block, natural stone and brick, and finish the top with capstones.

A wall can also cut a flat yard out of a slope, or step it down in terraces.

We work for homeowners, builders and designers, on new lots and on walls that have started to lean.

Call (919) 625-3963 and we will walk the slope with you and write up a free estimate.

What we build

Retaining Walls done right.

  1. Segmental block walls

Interlocking block walls in clean, uniform lines, with cap units to finish the top.

  2. Stone retaining walls

Natural and fieldstone-look stone, laid dry or mortared to suit the landscape.

  3. Brick retaining walls

Brick walls for low grade changes that need to match a brick house.

  4. Terraced walls

Stepped walls that break a steep slope into level beds and walkable tiers.

  5. Walls that make flat yard

A wall on the low side that holds fill and levels the ground for a patio, lawn or play area.

  6. Drainage, base and geogrid

The buried parts: compacted base, drainage stone, pipe and geogrid where the wall needs it.

    Dig, build, backfill

Our masons set the base, build the wall, backfill with drainage stone and clean the site.

Around the Triangle

Retaining walls for Triangle slopes.

The Triangle looks gentle, but many lots fall away toward a creek, a street or a neighbor.

Red clay drinks water, swells and pushes, so a wall here has to drain or the clay will move it.

Summer storms drop a lot of rain fast, which puts a hillside and a wall to the test.

Newer subdivisions in Cary, Apex and Wake Forest can leave one steep bank, and a wall turns it into usable ground.

Older lots inside the Beltline often have walls that have leaned or cracked, and we rebuild those.

Pine roots and tree lines affect where a wall can go. We plan around them.

Questions

Retaining Walls questions.

Something else on your mind? Call (919) 625-3963 and ask.

Do I need geogrid in my retaining wall?

Not every wall does. Taller walls, and walls holding up a driveway or a slope above, usually do.

We tell you what yours needs once we see the ground.

How do you stop water building up behind the wall?

We backfill with clean drainage stone and run a drain pipe to an outlet.

Water leaves from behind the wall instead of loading it.

Can you fix a retaining wall that is leaning?

Often the wall has to be rebuilt, because a lean usually means water or a weak base.

We open it up, fix the cause and rebuild.

Which is better, block, stone or brick?

It depends on the slope and the house. Segmental block is a strong, even choice for taller walls.

Stone and brick suit low walls that match the house.
