Patios & hardscaping

The part of the yard you walk on.

Hardscaping is the part of your yard that does not grow: the patio, the paths, the steps and the walls.

It also decides where water goes, so the job starts with the slope, not the stone.

We build patios in flagstone, bluestone, natural stone and concrete or clay pavers.

We build walkways and garden paths, steps and landings, raised beds, entryways and low walls.

Under every surface goes a compacted base and an edge that holds it in place.

The surface is set to a slight fall so rain runs off and away from the house.

We pay attention to the joints, the cuts and the places where one surface meets the next.

Done right, a patio stays level and a path stays put through wet springs and hot summers.

Call (919) 625-3963 and we will walk the yard with you, talk through the layout, and write up a free estimate.

What we build

Patios done right.

  1. Natural stone patios

Flagstone, bluestone and other natural stone set for dining, seating and a grill.

  2. Paver patios

Concrete and clay pavers in patterns that suit the house, edged so they stay put.

  3. Walkways and paths

Front walks and garden paths in stone or paver, laid to drain and to feel steady underfoot.

  4. Steps and landings

Stone and masonry steps with even risers and a landing wide enough to stop on.

  5. Raised beds and low walls

Stone beds, borders and low walls that hold soil and give a yard its lines.

  6. Entryways and drainage

Front entries built to shed water, with the grade shaped so puddles do not form.

How it works

From the first call to the clean-up.

  1. 01

    Call or write

Tell us the spot and what you want on it. Pictures of the yard help a lot.

  2. 02

    A look at the slope

We read the grade, the drainage, the shade and any roots that shape the layout.

  3. 03

    Choose and approve

You pick the stone, pattern and edge, then approve a written, itemized estimate.

  4. 04

    Dig, base and lay

We excavate, compact the base, lay the surface, fill the joints and leave the yard clean.

Around the Triangle

Built for red clay and summer storms.

Red clay is the first thing to plan for in Raleigh, since it holds water and moves as it wets and dries.

A thin base on clay settles, so we dig deeper where the soil calls for it.

Many Triangle lots slope toward the house or street, so grade and drainage come first.

Pine roots and big hardwoods change where a patio can sit.

Older homes inside the Beltline often want a stone path or stoop that fits the brick.

Newer homes in Cary and Apex often want one wide patio off the back.

Summer storms test every edge, so we restrain it and pitch the surface to shed water.

Questions

Patios questions.

Something else on your mind? Call (919) 625-3963 and ask.

How do I choose between stone and pavers?

Stone gives a natural, irregular look. Pavers give clean lines and tight patterns.

We bring samples so you can see both in your own light.

Will my patio drain away from the house?

It should, and that is the first thing we set.

We pitch the surface away from the house and shape the grade around it.

Can you fix a patio that has sunk or heaved?

Often, yes. Settling usually means a weak base.

We lift the surface, rebuild the base under it, and set the stone or pavers back down level.

Can the walkway, steps and patio be one project?

Yes. Doing them together keeps the levels and the materials matched.

We can also split the work into stages if you prefer.
